How to choose a window cleaning robot

Window cleaning robots have gone from novelty to genuinely useful in about five years. They're also a category where the marketing runs well ahead of the reality, so here's a straight guide to what matters, what doesn't, and where these machines still fall short.

1. Fall protection is the only spec you can't compromise on

A window robot is holding roughly two kilograms against a vertical pane using air pressure. Above ground floor, a detachment is a serious incident. Three things prevent it, and you want all three:

  • A safety rope. Non-negotiable. Anchored to a fixed point indoors, it means the worst case is a dangling robot rather than one on the pavement. Any robot sold without one is telling you something.
  • A backup battery. This is the spec buyers most often miss. Mains-powered robots lose suction instantly if the power cuts — a backup battery keeps the vacuum running long enough for the robot to hold position or park safely. Never buy a corded model without it.
  • A detach alarm. The robot should beep and stop if suction drops, not carry on regardless.

3. Corded or cordless
